Jimi Hendrix, el hombre que definió la guitarra en el rock
La revolucionaria forma de ejecutar el instrumento, en una perfecta mezcla de virtuosismo y originalidad lo transformó en mito. Con una breve y exitosa carrera -interrumpida por su muerte a los 27 años- Jimi Hendrix sacó tres discos y un puñado de actuaciones memorables para definir el rol de la guitarra eléctrica en el rock.
Su velocidad para ejecutar solos; su capacidad para combinar distintos efectos, el uso del pedal wah-wah y sus pirotécnicas presentaciones prendiendo fuego el instrumento como si se tratara de un sacrificio. Lo convirtieron en el modelo que todo músico quiso seguir.
Pero además, este músico también dejó su sello en clásicos como “Little wing”, “Purple haze”, “Voodoo Chile” y “Crosstown traffic”, entre otros.
Artistas de la talla de Paul McCartney y Bob Dylan cayeron rendidos a sus pies. Al punto que el ex beatle lo recomendó especialmente para que fuera parte del Festival de Monterrey, en 1967, cuando aún era un desconocido.
La relación de Hendrix con la guitarra arrancó a los 15 años. Sin embargo, desde muy pequeño solía usar una escoba para simular que interpretaba canciones de sus héroes bluseros: Muddy Waters, B.B.King, Robert Johnson y Howlin’ Wolf.
Junto con el bajista Noel Redding y el baterista Mitch Mitchell formó The Jimi Hendrix Experience, la famosa agrupación con la que grabó sus tres revolucionarios discos “Are you experienced”, “Axis: Bold as love” y “Electric Ladyland”.
Ese mismo año puso punto final a The Jimi Hendrix Experience y se lanzó con la Band of Gypsies, con la que grabó un disco en vivo editado en 1970; del mismo modo inauguró su propio estudio de grabación, el ahora mítico Electric Ladyland, en Nueva York, en el que grabaron los más famosos músicos del mundo, entre ellos, Charly García.
Sin embargo, el uso que Hendrix le dio a su estudio fue mínimo, debido a su prematura muerte, en septiembre de 1970, por una mezcla de alcohol y drogas. El niño genio que nació un 7 de noviembre de 1942 en Seattle, falleció 27 años después.
